| 14 December 2008 - ASBESTOS REGISTER |
| Some years ago when I was serving on OTAGO, they found a fault in the steam pipes which necessitated us going alongside Pearl Harbour to have them replaced and relagged. At the time we were all advised to register with the Asbestos Registration, which I did. I have since spoken with a number of ex sailors and enquired as to whether they had registered having served on ships with asbestos in the pipe lagging. Some had and some had not. So here is the form required to register for exposure to asbestos. Asbestos Registration I have also included the War Disabilty Pension Application for those who are interested War Disability Application Form |

nonentity, a limb of the oppressed, Of all the mass of
traffic through the torture ether hurled, I used to wonder
meekly when control would let me in But once – and only
once – I found my baser self constrained I often sit and wonder
where that blameless dot has gone, But though beyond our

|
Here's one to test the memory of you old blokes who used to keep watch on 16 megs ship-shore. See whether or not, you still recall the old Maritime Commercial "Q" signals and jargon. L/Tels Bill Bailey and Syd Kiddle were up at ZLD for their extended long weekend where they had purchased a pre W.W.11, 15 cwt "Chevvy" truck for about 30 quid and on the Tuesday, were in the process of driving it down to Irirangi. Before departing Auckland they sent the following telegram to the Waiaruhe Post Office which was in the YMCA at Irirangi. The Postmistress was Mrs Owen Mogford received the following telegram: SVC QTO ZLD 0730M BND ZLO QTP 1700M STOP BAIKID This telegram was followed by another shortly afterwards:- SVC QTP DRURY 0900M ALONGSIDE FOR REPAIRS ESTIMATE SIX WEEKS STOP BAIKID |

| 5 November 2008 - WAR PENSIONS ACT - REWRITE |
|
The NZDF has been
working on how best to arrange for those now serving to contribute to the
War Pensions Act re-write process.
Measures taken include attendance, as observers, by a serving military representative at the Law Commission's "Roadshow" now being held at RSAs up and down the country. This is good, because it ensures that the serving Force is able to see first-hand what the issues really are, as seen by veterans - a unique and important opportunity. The Defence Force will also be doing its own internal "roadshow" at camps and bases over the next few weeks. Accordingly we have arranged that the RSA interest will be represented at these sessions by District Presidents in their areas. This will enable us to hear first-hand what serving soldiers, sailors and airmen are saying, but also to make RSA views and capabilities known where appropriate. These and other things illustrate how the public undertakings to improve connections between ex-Service organisations and the serving military are now beginning to be put into effect. But this is a two-way street. There is not much future in our just waiting for Defence to "do something". We must be proactive, and work at it too. After all, one-third of the currently serving military - about 5,000 - come under the present definitions of "veteran". Here is an example of pro-active opportunity. The NZDF is running a questionnaire on their Web site, aimed at assisting the WPA rewrite process. We asked whether this opportunity could be made available to veterans as well. The answer was "Yes". In fact it was "Yes, of course". You will find it here: https://forms.nzdf.mil.nz/nzdf/war-pensions-act-review-survey.asp or you can get there by going to the main page http://www.nzdf.mil.nz and clicking on the link with the poppy called 'Towards a new veterans entitlement scheme - your Voice your Choice' and scrolling down to the link ' Fill in a simple online survey'. Whether or not you have done - or intend to do - a separate response to the Law Commission's discussion document, please also participate in the survey now made available by the NZDF. While it doesnft cover everything you might want to say, it is part and parcel of the process, and is a great opportunity for you to make many points easily. Regards to all Robin Klitscher National President RNZRSA |

| 1 October 2008 - Review of the War Pensions Act 1954 |
|
The Law Commission is carrying out a review of
the War Pensions Act 1954 and have published a 285 page booklet covering
the Act. The commission has asked for submissions on this document. Copies of this Booklet are held by all R S A's It behoves us all to take part iand make submissions if you consider they are relevant Below are a few notes to help you on making a submission 1. They shoould be typed. This is because they have to be scanned and copied for distribution to people reading and analysing them and it makes their job much easier. If you cannot do it yourself get your freind or an organisation to do it for you. 2. Paragraphs should be numbered for ease of reference 3. Use short sentences. Long covoluted sentences are difficult to read and often lack clarity of meaning 4. Use sub paragraphs for lists of points. 5. Put a space between paragraphs and sub paragraphs. 6. Keep your submissions to the issues raised in the review 7. Ensure that the points you raise are referenced to the appropraite paragraphs in the review 8. Remember you are looking ahead to the future not regurgitating the past. There is no need to make criticisms of the present situation. The Law Commission has done that very effectively in the review. 9. Give priority to areas that affect your organisation or yourself. 10. Use personal experience where this can provide reasons why you support or do not suppoprt a particular option or proposal in the review 11. Often people focus on the things they don't like and tend to ignore what they do like, It is important that Key areas like the "reverse onus of proof" receive good support. 12. It does not have to be long or detailed, nor is there any expectation that every question has to be covered. A single statement such s "I agree with paragraphs.. .. ..' can make an adequate submission Numbers count...Encourage your mates and other ex-service personnel, and caregivers to those with disabilities and surviving spouse to also make submissions......The more...the better. This review can be downloaded in two parts at www.lawcom.govt.nz under the heading publications. |

| 1 October 2008 - FOUNDATION MEMBERSHIP |
|
It would appear that there is some confusion
over Foundation Membership which became part of our Constitution in
September 2007. Here is a little something which formed the background for
discussion at the 2007 AGM which I hope will clear up any confusion. Do we want the Communicators Association to stay afloat? or should we let it join the Cruisers, the Lochs, the Corvettes, and the Sweepers to the bottom. This is not an idle question but a simple fact of modern life. Unless we find a way to keep our association afloat, before too long it too will also become just another memory. We believe the loyalties, friendships and the achievements we shared are worth preserving. We also believe there are many others who feel the same way. But like any ship, our association can only stay afloat if we find a way to maintain her. So we have created Foundation Members. There will only ever be 100 Foundation Members. Each one will pay a once only fee of $100, be given a Foundation Membership Number and a special Membership Badge identifying, him or her, as a Foundation Member of the Association. In addition, an Honour Roll of Foundation members will be listed on a special page on the Associations Website. The once-only fee paid by each Foundation Member will NOT be used for general administration. Each members fee will b e lodged in the Associations Investment account, with only the interest accruing therefrom will be used to provide the sort of foundation necessary to keep the Communicators Association afloat. We think our memories are worth $100. If you agree, there is a number waiting for you. Why not use it? This item was raised at the 2008 Annual General Meeting which was held on Sunday, 29 September 2008 and it was considered worthy of another email out to clear up any confusion. Just to put a couple of things in perspective. Over the past we have been very lucky with the website being hosted at no cost to the association and there does not appear to be any hosting charges on the horizon. However, there is no guarantee, and we should be prepared if charges are likely at sometime in the future. Your Association also puts out a newsletter which has to be reproduced, enveloped and then snail mailed out once a year to over 500 members of the association both overseas and within New Zealand. This is no longer an inexpensive activity. So it is this type of Association Administration that the interest from Foundation Membership will be used. To date 19 members have taken up the option of Foundation Membership and a list can be found on the Association Website at http://www.rnzncomms.org and then select membership from the menu. A membership form is also available on the website from the same menu. |

Do we want the Communicator’s
Association to stay afloat, or should we just let it join other forgotten
RNZN Associations on the bottom. This is not an idle question but a simple
fact of modern life. Unless we find a way to keep our association afloat,
before too long it too will also become just another memory.
We believe the loyalties, friendships and achievements we shared are worth preserving. We also believe there are many others who feel the same way. But like any ship, our association can only stay afloat if we can find a way to maintain her. So, at the last Annual General Meeting, the membership voted and passed a resolution to create Foundation Membership. There will only ever be 100 Foundation Members. Each Foundation Member will pay a once only fee of $100, be given a Foundation Membership number between 1 & 100 and a special membership badge identifying him, or her, as a Foundation Member of the Association. In addition, an Honour Roll of Foundation Members will be listed on a special page on the Association web site. The once-only fee paid by each Foundation member will not be used for general administration. Each member’s fee will be lodged in the Association’s Investment Account where only the interest will be used to provide the solid foundation necessary to ensure the Communications Association remains well afloat for the future. We think our memories are worth $100. If you agree, there’s a number waiting for you. Why not use it? Please contact Barry on hilander@paradise.net.nz |
